Breast Cancer Self Checks: Take Your Health Into Your Own Hands

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are all aware of what breast cancer is and the devastating effect it can have on everyone involved. But what we really need to be more aware of is our own breast health and our own bodies.

Full transparency: Getting cancer is a huge fear of mine. I’m not afraid for my health in any other capacity – I find hand sanitizer a joke, I’ll eat after people I’m not even Facebook friends with and my 5 second rule is a good 5 days- but I am petrified I’m going to get some sort of cancer. Maybe because it strikes all types of people. Obesity related diseases I can control, lifestyle related diseases are easily avoided, but cancer can strike anyone, anytime. Add to that the fact that I don’t have health insurance (thank you, freelance work and finding a personal need to have a career I enjoy) and it’s pretty much on me to do everything I can to prevent that C-word: Healthy diet, regular exercise and regular self exams.

Know the facts: About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

Prevention is key. Do a self breast exam once a month.

Do you even know how? Not many women do.

First: Stand with your shoulders straight, hands on your hips. Look in the mirror for:

SUBWAY’s Get Fit Like the Seahawks Winners!

I had to.

We know how you guys get fit like the Seahawks (and how fantastically fit they are all looking this year), but what about the little ones?

I was asked to helped judge the SUBWAY FRESH FIT “Get Fit Like the Seahawks” Video and Poster Competition, and the winners have been chosen! And I must say, my faves took the top prizes!

The two grand prize winners, Emily, 3rd grade, Lakeland Hills Elementary and Elizabeth, 4th grade, Lawton Elementary, each received an awards package including an autographed Seahawks football, tickets to the November 4 Seahawks game vs. Vikings (jealous!), $500 in SUBWAY Cards, and a $1,000 fitness grant for their school to purchase new equipment and education resources.

Runners up in the contest, each receiving a $100 SUBWAY Card and tickets to the November 4 Seahawks game vs. Vikings (still jealous!), are: Killian, 2nd grade, Martin Sortun Elementary; Ivy, 1st grade, James Sales Elementary; and Zac, 3rd grade, Frantz Coe Elementary.

“It was great to reward the students for their initiative, creativity and active lifestyle,” said Seahawks president Peter McLoughlin. “These students are committed to staying healthy and fit and have set a great example for their friends and families.”

Check out these healthy kids, and their prize winning entries here:

Work Hard, Eat Clean, Talk Dirty

That’s scrawled across one of my favorite workout t-shirts from Strong is the New Skinny. I snatched it up the second I saw it because it speaks to my health philosophy to a T.

I am a firm believer that getting the body of your dreams is about 80 percent nutrition, and 20 percent exercise- no joke.

What you put into your body dictates what you get out of it. Notice I said “what” and not “how much”.

You always hear about diets that promise NO CALORIE COUNTING! and EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! Why are diets always screaming at us? Well, I’m here to tell you that this is actually possible, and pretty damn delicious.

I don’t eat to be thin, I eat to be healthy. I eat to get the most out of my body. I don’t count calories, I don’t count grams of fat or carbs or keep track of anything really, but I know the meals that I eat are specifically chosen for specific results. I eat clean- because junk in, means junk out. I’m a firm believer that we are so obese and allergic to so many new things because we aren’t feeding our kids, and ourselves, food- we are feeding them food like substances made in processing plants and chemistry labs. Or from over plumped, chemically filled chickens that are given growth hormones that cause them to balloon up faster that their legs can grow so they roll around in their own shit all day. Nummers.

So what does eating clean actually mean? It’s very simple:

My Clean Eating Rules:

1.) Quality over Quantity

200 calories of cake is not equal to 200 calories of avocado. Not all calories are created equal. Everything you put into your body takes you one step closer to your goal, or one step away from it. There are foods, no matter how many calories are in them, that can aid in weight loss, burn fat and preserve muscle. These foods are the same foods we’ve heard about for years: fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats.

I’m Baaaack!

Ah, to be back at my own blog, where I can say and do whatever the hell I want, because it’s the internet, and that’s what it’s for.

I had a blog a few years ago, Every Gym’s Nightmare for any of you who still remember, but sold the domain in favor of spending my time on paying writing jobs. (It’s a weird shell site now that barely works, so don’t waste your time looking for it.) I then took a step back from writing to be blog editor at DietsInReview.com, where I have happily been for over a year. Unfortunately, in order to keep that position I would need to relocate, and while I love the whole DIR crew and credit them for teaching me SO MUCH about this “job” we call the internet, I think it’s time I get back to writing.

I’m not much of a self-indulgent blogger, so you will rarely find pictures I have taken of myself in my bathroom mirror. Perverts. Chances are actually pretty good you’ll rarely see my face at all. I also don’t moderate negative comments, so lay it on me. Oh, how I’ve missed negative commenters- one of my favorite parts of blogging. I welcome it. I’ll admit it, I can be wrong. On occasion. In theory.

I will however, post some of my workouts, the occasional meal and any rant I feel the need to go on. My absolute favorite part of blogging, however, and you already know this if your followed Every Gym’s Nightmare, is reader questions, so send them my way.

So, poke around, send me questions, perhaps learn a thing or two and don’t forget to like my Facebook page and follow me on Twitter. I hate Twitter, it confuses me, but I’ll try my best, tweeps.
